PAIN
Pain:
It’s purpose is to warn us that something is wrong with the
body, like in the case of appendicitis or a heart attack, so
that we will get help. If we have pain, we should never
ignore it, we should find its source and do our best to deal
with it.
But
chronic pain is a completely different thing. It doesn’t
help us and it does hinder us and keep us from being as
happy and productive as we could be. It can also cause us to
behave in a way that is not “like us”. Chronic pain affects
the sufferer and the people around him or her.
When
pain is intense, it can cause us to be supersensitive to
everything and everyone around us. Sometimes, when we are in
pain, we lash out at those around us for no reason, or for
some slight reason that wouldn’t bother us if we were not in
pain.
One
of the worst things about being in constant pain is that
sometimes, you begin to think that you must somehow be at
fault. Maybe you’ve sinned and maybe God is angry at you.
But, if you are in pain IT IS NOT YOUR FAULT. And, it
doesn’t mean that God is angry at you.
Some
doctors believe that when there is chronic pain there is an
emotional root. While I believe that is certainly possible,
I think it’s ridiculous to believe that all or even most
chronic pain is due to emotions. There are many illnesses
that produce chronic pain, such as Fibromyalgia, Lupus,
Multiple Sclerosis, Degenerative Disc disease---and many
more. But, having said that, let’s not overlook our
emotions. Things like continued sadness, anger, bitterness,
depression will definitely take its toll on our
bodies—besides having an effect on our spirits.
Most
pain can be helped by medication, but some pain will not
respond. Then, the sufferer is left in a constant state of
pain. Sometimes, it becomes unbearable. Why does God allow
that to happen? I don’t know. I don’t really think anyone
knows, even if they claim to. Oh, there are some occasions
when we do discover reasons but, generally, it remains a
mystery to us.
What
is clear, however, is that God is right there with us
while we are suffering and that He will help us though it.
And, in many cases, He will take the pain away. When He
doesn’t (and for me He hasn’t) we need to live every minute
of our lives dependent on HIM. That’s the only way we’ll
make it through. Actually, everyone needs to live their
lives that way, they just don’t realize it.
